170 year-old building firm snaps up merchants

LEEDS-BASED Howarth Timber and Building Supplies, founded in 1840, has acquired a rival business.

Maltings Timber Merchants has been bought by the firm, which turned over £72.0m with pre-tax profits £2.7m for the year to 31 March 2015.

Maltings has been in Doncaster for 30 years, specialising in timber products from sustainable sources.

The outlet became the company’s 30th branch, which will be led by Chris Noble, who joins Howarth Timber and Building Supplies.

Nicholas Howarth, managing director of Howarth Timber and Building Supplies, said: “Maltings Timber Merchants is a successful business with standards and values that match up with those of Howarth Timber.

“The acquisition will allow us to expand the product ranges available to customers, with building supplies added to the already excellent timber offering at the store.

“With the Thorne branch of Howarth Timber located eight miles away on the outskirts of Doncaster, and led by the newly promoted regional manager John Brandon, this new branch enhances our presence in the town and ensures the region’s tradespeople are covered.

“Customers can enjoy the same expert advice, quality of products and great service from the superb team employed with Maltings Timber who are now part of the Howarth team.

“The introduction of building materials to the product offering at the branch will also ensure the outlet offers more choice in new areas.”
