Are you in or are you out? Managing director at electricals business weighs in on Brexit

Andy Singleton, managing director of YESSS Electrical dicusses the difficulties surrounding a Brexit for the electrical wholesaler.

In or out? Undecided.

Why?

From a one perspective, we ought to stay in as YESSS is present across Europe and it is good to be part of the same trading community.

Businesses would like to stay together and industry is protected by EC agreement.

Personally I think best practice would prevail in Britain and I don’t think we would lose our ability to trade as a consequence, but as a business we’re undecided. A Brexit would not impact the UK in a drastic way but we would prefer to remain with European colleagues.

However because the UK trades in GBP, regardless of whether we are in or out – we will always face trading between UK and EU with fluctuating exchange rates.

People are uncertain at the moment and the uncertainty over the next ten weeks will cause a lull in UK trade.

What would Brexit mean for your business?

As an electrical wholesale sector, there are so many differences anyway in product and supply chain- we don’t have the same voltage, don’t have same cables or plugs, we don’t have the same standards. Whether we are in or out of EU all those differences will remain.

There is no harmonisation of pricing in our sector, no harmonisation of standards or product info, management systems.
