Boost for £2.2m Kirkgate regeneration as art hostel opens its doors

AN art hostel which aims to contribute to the continuing development of Kirkgate in Leeds city centre has opened its doors.

Launched by Leeds-based arts organisation East Street Arts, the hostel is a unique concept offering accommodation dedicated to artists and creative talents visiting the city.

It will host up to 30 people in shared and private rooms which have been designed by local artists.

The Art Hostel is the latest project to be welcomed in the city by East Street Arts, with the organisation already hosting three open studio spaces around Leeds as well as community programmes and activities for local budding artists.

Leeds-based Blacks Solicitors advised on the lease for the building on 83 Kirkgate, the former Bird’s Yard site.  The Art Hostel is the latest in a series of developments contributing to the £2.6m regeneration of the Kirkgate area.

Nick Dyson, a commercial property partner at Blacks, said: “We have a very Art Hostelstrong relationship with East Street Arts and have assisted on a number of its projects in the past.

“It’s fantastic to see dynamic cultural organisations such as East Street Arts investing in Kirkgate, adding value and transforming it into a vibrant and buzzing area of the city.  It’s a pleasure to be involved in this exciting and unique project.”

Nicola Greenan, external relations director at East Street Arts Leeds, said: “We specifically chose Kirkgate for the Art Hostel as we felt its quirky, unique identity reflects the creative, artistic spirit of East Street Arts.”
