Former accountant takes on chief executive role for Blades

LEAGUE One club Sheffield United has a replacement chief executive following the departure of Jim Phipps last week.

Stephen Bettis has been working in an advisory capacity for the Blades. He took over responsibilities from former club managing director Mal Brannigan at the end of 2015.

A former accountant, he moved into industry after several years in the financial services, before becoming a finance director at a property investment company that operated throughout Europe.

He will also become a director at the club.

Mr Bettis’ appointment follows the departure of Mr Phipps last week. He wrote on his Facebook page that he had decided “with a heavy heart” to quit with immediate effect.

He added: “What I have not been able to give you, and what we all desire, I wish for you with all my heart: Serial promotions and a return to the Premiere League. God bless and up the Blades.”

“We are delighted to make Stephen’s role permanent, where he will lead our off-the-field activities and liaise closely with new team manager Chris Wilder,” said co-owner Kevin McCabe.
