Charity: Accountant’s Transatlantic marathon challenge; Lawyers take on 137 mile cycle ride; Boost for Sea Cadets; and more

A TEAM of four partners and directors from DWF took part in a 137 mile charity off-road cycling challenge along the longest canal route in the UK, stretching from Liverpool to Leeds.

Glyn Jones, Paul Holmes, Richard Parker and Steve Dawson all raised over their £2000 target, with the money going to the firm’s recently launched grant-giving service DWF Foundation.

The Foundation supports charities and projects across the UK that address education, employability, health and wellbeing and homelessness, and allows them to apply for funds to help in the local communities.

Martin Holden, head of office at Saffery Champness in Harrogate, has already raised over £19,000 for the charity through a series of marathons and half marathons, including this year’s London Marathon, which he completed in just under four hours.

He is now preparing to run the New York Marathon in November in an attempt to hit his fundraising target.

“I could never have imagined that I’d be talking about raising this amount of money but it’s now within reach and the support I’ve received has inspired me to take on an extra challenge this year in aid of this very worthwhile cause.”

MEMBERS of Keighley Sea Cadets will be enjoying a more comfortable trip to their training weekends in future, thanks to a £2,500 donation.

Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation has given the money to the charity towards the cost of a box trailer, which will be used to carry the cadets’ luggage, equipment and supplies when they attend training weekends.

Corinne Metcalfe, of the cadets’ fundraising team, said: “Currently all luggage and equipment is transported on the minibus which takes up seats which then restricts the amount of cadets who are able to travel. So we are very grateful to Skipton’s Charitable Foundation for their generous donation.”

Keighley Sea Cadets are part of the UK’s oldest nautical youth charity. The local unit prides itself on strong links with the local community and the opportunities that they provide to the young people of Keighley and surrounding areas.

Charlie Forbes-Adam canoe challengeESCRICK PARK owner and former High Sheriff of North Yorkshire Charlie Forbes Adam and his friend Nick Woodhead have completed a canoe challenge, 87 miles along the River Derwent to the River Ouse.

The pair raised more than £4,000 so far of their £10,000 fundraising target in aid of The Bridges in Hull, a residential rehabilitation facility for men run by the charity RAPt (Rehabilitation of Addicted Prisoners Trust).

As chairman of RAPt’s Fundraising Advisory Group in Yorkshire, Mr Forbes Adam has been at the forefront of RAPt’s fundraising work since 2010. He has raised more than £700,000 for RAPt’s rehabilitation service in Hull, The Bridges.

Mr Forbes Adam, whose own personal struggle with addiction inspired him to support RAPt and The Bridges, said: “We’re absolutely wrecked but it’s been brilliant – a great adventure. People have been so friendly along the way – even local fishermen, despite us ruining their catches. The Bridges is something that has been close to my heart for many years and I would like to thank everyone who has made a donation and helped out. It makes the challenge all the more rewarding to know it has made a difference to The Bridges and the fantastic work they do to turn people’s lives around. Nick and I are already planning our next escapade.”
