Rescue business rises from the ashes of closed Kellingley mines

A RESCUE business which had its Yorkshire base at the former Kellingley Colliery near Pontefract, has re-opened in the region.

Mines Rescue Service announced that it would be closing after decades based at Kellingley, but that it would reopen in Knottingley, keeping skills in the region.

Nottinghamshire-based MRS have now opened a training centre with improved facilities.

MRS was founded more than 100 years ago in response to emergencies in the UK mining industry. Now, only 7% of its income is generated from mines and it has been able to branch out from underground mining, working in nuclear, aerospace and utilities.

It employs 140 people across its various operations, and nearly 70% of operational staff are ex-mine workers. Last year the company had a turnover of £11m. It is confident that it will double this in the next five years.

In 2013 it was announced that a £200m renewable energy facility would be built at the former Kellingley Colliery site.
