Property consultants make move to Grade II listed city building

CONSTRUCTION and property consultancy Castle Owen has moved to newly refurbished Grade II listed premises in Sheffield.

The company, which provides project management, surveying, design services and construction health and safety, outgrew its premises in Crookes.

Castle Owen, which is the new name for Bond Bryan Building Surveying, has taken 2,320 sq ft of the two storey building at the Langsett Road/Penistone Road development and undertaken a significant internal refurbishment on the property, which dates back to 1854.

Tim Castle, managing director at Castle Owen, said: “We had outgrown our premises in Crookes and took the decision to not only rebrand, but move premises at the same time. We wanted something that suited our profile and would help create an identity for the company, and also be able to showcase our skills in refurbishment design and implementation.

“The move has made such a difference. We have created an invigorating working environment in a building that befits us as a company and can accommodate growth. It’s really given everyone a lift.”

Various army units were stationed at the Hillsborough Barracks site which covers 22 acres and dates from 1848. It contained the mess, chapel, a 5 bedroomed house, a 58-patient hospital, a dental clinic, infantry soldiers’ quarters, a clock tower, stabling for 260 horses, a riding school, a school, married quarters flats, a gun shed, barracks store, guard room, exercise yard, vehicle shed, veterinary infirmary, a granary, four cookhouses and various workshops.

A major redevelopment of the site took place in the late 1980s resulting on the large retail and business complex featuring Morrisons supermarket, a two-storey car park, a B&Q DIY superstore, a McDonald’s drive-through restaurant, garage and petrol station.

Ben White, associate at Knight Frank in Sheffield, said: “I introduced Castle Owen to a number of buildings suitable for their plans and Hussar Court at Hillsborough Barracks ticked all the boxes. It has made a fantastic new base for their growing business and is part of a Sheffield heritage property.”
