Five-star hotel set to double up with start of £15m development

CONSTRUCTION has begun at The Grand Hotel & Spa in York, doubling the number of guest rooms and adding a restaurant to its five-star facilities.

The development was announced back in April 2015. Owners the Splendid Hospitality Group had acquired the adjoining Roman House from Skelwith property group.

Skelwith had acquired the building in 2013 from Aviva after it became “surplus to “requirements.”

Now, Keighley-based RN Wooler & Co Ltd, alongside architects McKenzie Wheeler have commenced on site.

The team is completed Arcacia Consulting, Consarc Design Group, Twenty2 Degrees Design Partnership, Phillips Page Associates, and Walsh.

Splendid are investing £15m adding 107 rooms as well as a 140-seater restaurant. Existing rooms will be refurbished at the grade II-listed hotel, with new spaces for corporate hospitality.

The restaurant will be opened by the beginning of 2017, with the new rooms finished soon after.

Maria Florou, The Grand Hotel & Spa’s general manager, commented: “The Grand has a reputation for its first class service in an exceptional setting, so it is fantastic that we are going to be able to offer that to many more guests – both those from outside of the area and also the residents of York.
