SME Spotlight: Artisan bakery goes wholesale as it doubles production

ARTISAN bakery Brown and Blond is relocating to Leeds in a move that will see production more than double.

Brown and Blond, a specialist brownie maker from Ripon, will be doubling production to 30,000 brownies a week, an increase of 250%.

In 2010, at 18 years old, founder George Welton set up the business from an outbuilding at his parents’ smallholding near York before moving to a bakery in Ripon in 2014.

Turnover is forecast to reach £350,000 over the next twelve months and George plans to take on another two bakers to meet demand. The business has appeared at the great Yorkshire Show and is focusing on wholesale moving forward.

Mr Welton said: “We have doubled the square footage we had in Ripon which will allow us to invest in more equipment and staff and achieve our long term goal of taking the taste of Yorkshire Brown and Blond brownies nationwide.”
