Sweet success for Haribo makers as turnover reaches £165m

HARIBO is seeing success this year, with turnover reaching £165m, but has warned that it expects confectionary consumption to decrease in the UK.

Although the Government has delayed its Obesity Strategy, prolific media coverage of the obesity issue has meant that the company is warning of negative market impact in the short to medium term.

The company said: “We continue to believe in the strength of our brands and the quality of our products to grow our share of the market in these adverse market conditions, haribo and Maoam have always been positioned as a treat…Furthermore continuous investment in our brands and new product launches should enable Haribo and Maoam to continue to grow market share in the UK market.”

Turnover for the Dunhills (Pontefract) company, which was acquired by Haribo in 1994 to bolster its UK presence, rose to £165.4m for the year to 31 December

It said that favourable exchange rates and raw material costs had helped the business offset startup costs for its £94m Normanton facility.

Haribo has been producing sweet treats in the UK for nearly 20 years. The brand first came to the UK in the early 70’s when shares were purchased in Dunhills of Pontefract.
