Fire hits two West Yorkshire sites

TWO major fires have hit West Yorkshire sites over the weekend.

The first was a blaze at a large industrial complex on Bowl Shaw Lane in Halifax. The site contained 25 lorries containing flammable liquids including LPG, acetylene and diesel.

On Sunday, a crew of 50 firefighters were working on site and the fire service said it would be in attendance throughout the night.
Around 50 firefighters attended the blaze and police have advised motorists to seek alternative routes if they are heading for the Shelf roundabout.

Another 50 fire rescue personnel were called to a major blaze at a Morrisons supermarket depot in the Wakefield area.

The fire service was called to the warehouse is on the Wakefield 41 Industrial Estate, close to Junction 41 of the M1, at around 4.30pm.

Kenmore Road in Wakefield, was closed in both directions as fire crews tackle the flames.

Inspector Paul Maxfield, of Wakefield District Neighbourhood Patrol, said: “Due to the size of the fire, a large number of fire appliances were deployed which necessitated road closures around the scene. The fire is not being treated as suspicious and there were no serious injuries but a small number of members of staff were treated for smoke inhalation.

“We are continuing to liaise closely with the fire service to assist with their management of the incident and are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to neighbouring businesses and the surrounding community.”

Around 80% of the 86,000 sq ft building was on fire, the fire service said.
