M1 closed as emergency services respond to vehicle fire

A VEHICLE fire has caused the M1 motorway to be closed while emergency services respond.

The M1 in South Yorkshire is closed southbound between J33 and J32, due to a car towing a caravan that has caught fire. All emergency services are on scene.

Traffic is advised to exit the M1 at J33 and take the A630 westbound towards Sheffield. At the junction with the A57, take the A57 eastbound towards Aston and re-join the M1 southbound at J31.

Early estimates suggest the incident will take at least an hour to deal with before traffic conditions return to normal.

12.50PM UPDATE: One lane has been opened past the scene, but two lanes remain closed while recovery work takes place.

1.25PM UPDATE: There are currently long delays stretching back to junction 35, with two lanes still closed on the southbound carriageway.
