Belle Isle affordable homes schemeTHE construction of 33 new homes in Belle Isle in Leeds is underway.

The two and three bedroom homes are being built by Leeds Federated Housing Association as part of an Affordable Homes Programme, which is also supported by a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency and Leeds City Council.

Designed by Headingley-based Brewster Bye Architects, the £3.7m development is being built across two sites – Newhall Gate and Newhall Walk – which were previously owned by Leeds City Council.  The building work is being carried out by Lovell Construction and the homes will be ready to move into by the summer of 2017.

Architect Roger Stannard says: “We have purposely designed the development to fit in with the existing properties in the area and have therefore used traditional forms for the houses as well as adding a wide range of contemporary detailing. This includes stylish dark grey fibre cement cladding and panels to the front of the homes which are a great design element that really makes them stand out from the crowd.”

Steve Ellis, head of assets and development from Leeds Federated, says: “These properties will provide much needed affordable accommodation in Belle Isle and help Leeds Federated achieve its targets of building quality new homes for affordable rent.”

York Handmade Brick CompanyTHE York Handmade Brick Company has played a pivotal role in the construction of a distinctive modern house in Hertfordshire.

David Armitage, chairman of York Handmade, said: “This was an absolutely fascinating commission, not least because the stunning Moses Dell was built on the site of an old brickworks and has been designed to reflect its interesting history.

“This commission has given us the chance to showcase our increasingly popular long Maxima bricks, which are rapidly becoming our USP. Maxima bricks are much-liked by architects because they lend themselves to innovative and bold designs.”
