WORK to deliver 86 homes in Hull on land where a block of flats once stood has begun.

The £8.4m affordable housing scheme on the site of the former Milldane flats at Orchard Park, which were demolished in 2013, is being delivered by Wates Living Space Homes on behalf of Hull City Council.

It will comprise nine one-bedroom and 49 two-bedroom houses and 28 one-bedroom apartments.

Designed by architects Croft Goode, the affordable homes are part of the council’s overall strategy to regeneration the area. Building work is expected to reach completion by the end of 2017.

The development adds to Wates Living Space Homes’ presence in Hull, which to date has included the delivery of 316 one and two-bedroom extra care apartments across three sites, on behalf of Hull City Council and Riverside, as well as the development at Hall Road (pictured).

As part of its continued role in the city’s regeneration, the developer has made a pledge to use the building work to create local opportunities for on-site training and employment.

Mick Holling, business director, Wates Living Space Homes, said: “Our ongoing presence in Hull has enabled us to continually ensure that local people benefit from the essential investments that are being made in new housing for the city.

“Our delivery of the former Milldane site is an acknowledgment of our team’s expertise and the success we have had in striking a balance between creating high quality homes, efficiently, and furthermore doing so whilst keeping the community at the centre of our work.”

Cllr John Black, Hull City Council portfolio holder for infrastructure said: “Our plans for housing regeneration across the city are ambitious. Wates shares our ambitions, as demonstrated by their commitment to investing in skills and jobs in the area to help build quality, new affordable homes.

“Already the skyline of Orchard Park has changed and the recent demolition, refurbishment and the new build programme, as well as new opportunities for residents, is transforming the area and offering the community a viable, long term future.”
