Major supermarket plans to create 400 jobs scrapped

PLANS for a 60,000 sq ft supermarket in York which would have created 400 jobs have been scrapped.

Sainsbury’s announced plans for the former B&Q on Hull Road in York in 2013.

It would have created 400 jobs and reused the former DIY site with 490 car parking spaces and a cafe.

But restrictions imposed by the City of York Council on delivery times, preventing them from between midnight and 5am. Sainsbury’s required 24-hour access.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we will no longer be proceeding with our plans to open a Sainsbury’s at the B&Q, Hull Road, in York.”

“Obviously this is disappointing but the planning conditions restricting our delivery hours means that it is simply not viable for us to operate the store.”

B&Q have confirmed that they will now not be moving their Hull Road site, at which they employ 99 people.

A spokesperson from B&Q said: “Taking into account the changes that have occurred within our business since the submission of the planning application in 2014, we can confirm we have withdrawn the planning appeal and let our 99 employees at B&Q York know that their Hull Road store will no longer be relocating.”
