Jobseekers spend £146 getting ready for a job interview – but then fail to prepare

British jobseekers are spending £1.44bn every year in the hope of bagging their dream job, but the majority are failing to prepare for the actual interview.

According to totaljobs, jobseekers are spending on average £146 per interview – forking out on a haircut, a new outfit, makeup, transport, CV writing assistance new shoes and even body language coaching.

The study found 16-24 year-olds were spending the most, with on average £167 going into a single interview, however the youth unemployment is only 16%.

Totaljobs suggests that this is down to the fact that nearly a third of job seekers don’t research the job they apply for and 37% of them don’t even research the industry they want to go into.

60% of jobseekers also fail to update their CV in order to make it relevant to each role. More than half of job seekers don’t get a good night’s sleep and 85% admit they don’t eat well prior to an interview.

With important preparation being neglected, it’s no surprise that three quarters of job seekers find the job hunting process difficult and 81% have job hunting fears.
