Consultation on £142m Leeds development gets underway

A CONSULTATION on plans for a major £142m development which will deliver 1,000 homes on brownfield land in Leeds is underway.

Leeds City Council and its development partners, Keepmoat and Strata will be hosting consultation events in East Leeds communities to discuss plans to build more than 950 homes.

Keepmoat has been working with Strata and the council on plans to redevelop 13 sites in Seacroft, Halton Moor and Osmondthorpe and is now ready to present the proposals to local communities.

Those attending will be able to ask questions about the timescales for the construction of the developments including all associated improvements to the greenspace and the installation of a new drainage system for the area.

The project is set to deliver affordable homes and purchasing initiatives such as Help to Buy.

Naomi Beckett, partnerships manager for Keepmoat, said: “Public consultation is an important part of the development process, especially for a project of this size and we look forward to welcoming local people to have their say on the plans.

“Along with Leeds City Council and Strata, we want to ensure local people are as involved as possible in this project. This is the first step in creating developments that add real value to these communities and we look forward to welcoming residents to our events this week.”

Nigel Robson, land director for Strata Homes Yorkshire, said: “We are looking forward to engaging with the local community and sharing our initial proposals for the schemes including the wider benefits these could deliver in tangible improvements to drainage and amenity space. Feedback from residents and stakeholders will help us develop the schemes further and consider site specific opportunities.”

Leeds City Council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, Cllr Richard Lewis, added: “With a clear focus on redeveloping brownfield land first we can lead the way in ensuring important new housing in Leeds is delivered.

“We hope that these events will allow local people to understand the scheme and more importantly offer their own opinions and help shape these developments. Using council land in a planned and co-ordinated way like this allows us to work with partners such as Keepmoat, Strata and others so that there is a supply of suitable, affordable, quality homes that meets Leeds’s need now and in the future.”
