My Yorkshire: Carolyn Black, Myddleton Croft

Carolyn Black is an associate director at Leeds-based investment firm Myddleton Croft

Where do you live/where are you from?
I am Yorkshire born and bred. I moved to Burley in Wharfedale two years ago and I don’t envisage moving again. I am very lucky to live where I do, on the edge of the River Wharfe in the shadow of Ilkley Moor.

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
The Dickensian Festival in Grassington in December is a favourite. Parking in Burnsall and walking along the river to Grassington ensures that a glass of mulled wine and a spot of Christmas shopping at the market is well deserved.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

I have never visited the Thornton Force Waterfall in Ingleton. It is part of the Ingelton Waterfall Walk and is reportedly breath-taking.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?

For my last birthday, my husband and I took the day off work and, after a walk to Malham Cove, we had a late lunch at The Tempest Arms in Elslack, which was delicious.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?
I do love Wensleydale cheese with Christmas cake. My friends and family from ‘down South’ have always found that a bit odd!

Favourite piece of trivia about the region
The Shambles is believed by many to be ‘the oldest street’ in York, but Lady Row in Goodramgate is actually the oldest, dating from 1320.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
It has to be the humble Yorkshire Pudding.

First experience of Yorkshire
We always head to York on the train with visiting folk. The vast rolling countryside on the journey over there and the wonderfully varied city encaptures everything that is great about Yorkshire.

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
Yorkshire’s rivers seem to be edging a little higher every year. It was devastating to see so many people so badly affected by the floods last Christmas.

What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
I find that the music scene is better in Manchester than in Leeds – I might be tempted to pinch a bit of that!

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

The M62 westbound! Need I say anymore?
