Yorkshire Post’s managing editor to leave group

THE managing editor of the Yorkshire Post, Nicola Furbisher, is to leave the newspaper, less than a year after major changes to its editorial structure.

Ms Furbisher, whose role included being the editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post, was given the new responsibilities last December, when Jeremy Clifford stepped up to become editor-in-chief of the newspapers’ parent group Johnston Press.

Johnston Press did not respond to a request for comment. Creative industries website Prolific North published an excerpt from her email to staff at the Leeds-based newspapers in which she said her reasons for leaving were ““wide and varied and mainly because there’s so much else I want to do and new opportunities I’d like to explore”.

She wrote: “There are projects I put on hold when I left Brussels to return to Leeds (three years ago this week!) that I want now to pick up. I’m conscious life is short, you only live once, and new opportunities, paths and projects await.

“I have been blessed to work with such a wonderful, inspiring people and know that I will stay in touch with many, many of you.”

Ms Furbisher was previously the editor of the Derbyshire Times and deputy editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post before moving to Brussels in 2011 when her husband took a job in the European Parliament. She returned in September 2013 to become the managing editor of Johnston Press Yorkshire.

Sales figures for the newspapers for the first half of 2016 showed the Yorkshire Post down 5.1% year-on-year at 26,500 and the Yorkshire Evening Post down 10% at 18,100 – both showing slower declines than the average, where double-digit drops were more common than not among regional newspapers.
