£10m downsized hotel scheme set for York

A HOTEL scheme in York has been given the go-ahead after developers agreed to downsize following objections from local residents.

The £10m project on Terry Avenue brought forward by operator Roomzzz and Parklane Properties was given the go-ahead by a planning committee last night.

It was recommended for approval earlier this week following an extensive report which listed objections from 74 local residents, after developers made concessions including reducing the height of the proposed building.

The main arguments against the 97-room site included that it would cause an increase in traffic and noise in the area, which is located off the historic Skeldergate Bridge in the city centre, concerns about parking and flood risks to the site after the devastating Boxing Day floods in 2015.

However planning officers said: “The scheme would regenerate a previously developed site and improve the vitality and viability of the area.”

Construction could take up to 12 months according to planning documents at the former industrial site known as Parkside Commercial Centre and the completed hotel would total three floors.

Sites previously looked at included Holgate Road, which was later redeveloped as a residential site despite having permission for a hotel, sites along Piccadilly and the old fire station which did not meet Roomzzz requirements and at Hungate, where another developer swooped in acquiring the site for a hotel.
