Burger chain brings in former Morrisons big cheese

FORMER Morrisons boss Dalton Philips is set to be named chairman of burger chain Byron.

The announcement expected today will see Mr Philips enter his first major corporate role since leaving the supermarket, and a return to the high street for the former chief executive of Morrisons.

He presided over a £792m loss at the supermarket before he was ousted in favour of David Potts, but received a £1.01m bonus for his work.

Mr Philips left Morrisons in February 2015 and was succeeded by current chief executive David Potts in March 2015 and since then has been busy turning the ailing supermarket around, getting rid of vestiges of Philips’ reign, including the My Local stores and renegotiating the expensive Ocado deal agreed under Philips.

In his new role at Byron Burgers, he will work with Andrew Manders, formerly of Fired Earth, who will replace Byron chief executive Tom BYng who is leaving to pursue other interests.

Byron was acquired by private equity firm Hutton Collins for £100m in 2013, and since then has doubled the amount of outlets and increased turnover to £80m this year.

In July 2016 the company was criticised for aiding and abetting an immigration raid on its London restaurants which rounded up 35 of its own workers.
