Construction firm prosecuted over crowbar injuries

A NORTH YORKSHIRE construction firm has been fined after a worker suffered facial injuries during work on a hotel.

The company, Walter Thompson (Contractors), was fined £33,000 with £12,552.81 in costs over the head injuries one of their workers received while working on the 47-bedroom extension of Ramside Hall Hotel in Durham.

During the installation of concrete slabs on 15 December 2014, a worker was hit in the jaw by a crowbar after it became wedged between two slabs.

He suffered a head injury, including lacerations to the head and jaw and dislocated teeth.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive into the incident found that WTL failed to adequately plan and manage the installation of the two floor slabs.

The Northallerton-based firm pleaded guilty to the charges against them and was fined just over £45,000.
