Earthquake strikes near North Yorkshire coast

A MAGNITUDE 3.8 earthquake has struck the North Sea off the coast of North Yorkshire.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the quake hit 150 miles east of Scarborough at 6.52pm yesterday.

BGS seismologists recorded the quake on devices located in Glasidale near Whitby.

There have been no reports of the earthquake having been felt by people on land.

An earthquake of a magnitude of 4 occurs in Britain on average every two years.
