Jobs lost as The Leeds Club to shut

THE LEEDS CLUB is to close with the loss of 12 full-time jobs after the building was sold.

The Grade II*-listed building on Albion Place in Leeds City Centre was built in 1820 and operated as a private members’ club from 1849 to 2013.

It then became a conference and events venue, specialising in weddings, corporate drinks receptions and conferences.

3 Albion Place was acquired in 2011 by 1st Credit founder Najib Nathoo and a group of investors and the “high demand and therefore high value of prime city centre commercial property” was the motivation for the sale. The identity of the purchaser has not been disclosed.

A Leeds Club spokesperson said the building had “since returned to profit” in the five years since it was acquired.

She added: “It was an extremely difficult decision for the directors of the business to accept an offer on the property but they have a duty to look after the financial interests of their shareholders and they believed that the sale of the freehold best served these interests.

“We are not at liberty to disclose who the purchaser is at this stage but we believe that they have the capital resources available to maintain this historic building to the standard that it deserves and ensure its long-term future for the people of Leeds.”

The Leeds Club has confirmed it will continue to meet all of its financial obligations and commitments up to and beyond the date that the property sale completes.
