The Snow Maiden is warm and beautiful, but she hides a tragic secret, her heart is made of ice. If warmed by human love, her heart will melt and she will die. Enchanted by the shepherd boy Lel, she yearns to experience life with humans. Her parents relent, with tragic consequences. Rimsky Korsakov’s delightfully colourful, folk-inspired opera is based on a well-loved Russian fairy tale and with inventive use of video imagery, the piece blends worlds of fantasy and reality.
