Bomb scare at £165m Victoria Gate

A BOMB scare caused disruption this morning at Hammerson’s £165m Victoria Gate shopping development in central Leeds.

At 8.39am this morning police were called to the shopping complex, which was opened at the end of last year.

After receiving the report, officers attended the scene and a suspicious package was found. A cordon was put in place and nearby buildings were evacuated. Aarmy experts examined the item before declaring it safe

By lunchtime, the cordon and road closures had been lifted. According to police the scene is undergoing forensic examination and enquiries are continuing.

West Yorkshire Police  have now said that a 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and was being held in custody.

Chief superintendent Paul Money said: “Clearly this caused significant disruption to people living and working in the city centre and to local businesses and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and support during this incident.”
