Record profits for £25m-turnover logistics group

The Potter Group has celebrated its 50th anniversary year reaching the highest pre-tax profit levels in its history.

The group, based at Melmerby in North Yorkshire, specialises in logistics and property investment and employs 280 people.

Subsidiaries include Potter Logistics and a joint venture, Chloros Environmental, which is involved in waste management and consultancy.

For the year to April 30, 2016, pre-tax profits came in at £2.66m, up from ££1.60m the year before.

Turnover also increased marginally to £26.0m from £24.8m in the previous year.

Despite the major success of 2016, the company made a move in October 2016 away from transport and logistics.

Preston and Hull-based WH Bowker acquired the company’s warehousing operations in Droitwich, Knowsley, Ripon, Selby and York at the end of last year, indicating a move away from haulage.

It said that Potter Group (Holdings) Plc would become a property investment company focusing on the development of its extensive land assets.

At the time, Potter chairman Derrick Potter said: “A key priority in recent years has been to look to the future of our excellent staff, as well as that of our customers, not simply at the legacy that we have built.”

Potter Group was founded in 1965 as Topcliffe Transport.
