Developers get approval for 160-bed York hotel

A Malmaison hotel in York has been given the green light.

The City of York Council approved plans for the 160-bed site on Rougier Street last Friday.

Investor Yorkshire Ventures acquired the site, along with funding partners HIG Capital last year.

It will develop the former Aviva site into a Malmaison brand hotel with 124-beds, along with 36 serviced suites and 13 residential apartments.

The site, Malmaison’s 16th in the UK, will have a Chez Mal Bar and Brasserie. Once opened it will support 120 jobs.

Paul Roberts, chief executive of Malmaison Hotel du Vin, said: “We have long been fans of York, where Hotel du Vin continues to be a favourite for both locals and visitors. The vibrancy of the city means that it is also a perfect location for the Malmaison brand.”

Richard Jackson, chairman of Yorkshire Ventures, added: “We are delighted to be working with Malmaison and to be part of the team bringing Britain’s best-loved hotel brand to the historic and world-famous city of York.”

In its planning approval document the council stipulated that the consortium had three years to commence the build.

The offices were the home of several hundred Aviva staff, before the insurance giant announced that it would be attempting to make savings of £225m by the end of 2017. This included selling off regional real estate.
