Jobs to go at HSBC in latest wave of branch closures

HSBC is to close 62 branches, including seven in Yorkshire, as it looks to finish its restucturing programme.

The latest wave of closures should signal the end of a two-and-a-half programme begun under former chief executive Stuart Gulliver.

“This marks the end of our branch restructuring programme,” said Antonio Simoes, chief executive of HSBC Bank. “We now feel we have the right branch network that complements the other ways in which customers now choose to interact with us.”

Up to 180 people are expected to be made redundant, after some staff have been redeployed.

The affected branches in Yorkshire are Brigg, Leyburn, Hemsworth, Kirkbymoorside, Stokesley, Thorne and Wath upon Dearne.

Francesca McDonagh, HSBC’s head of retail banking, said: “The way our customers bank with us is changing. More customers are using mobile and internet banking than ever before…and fewer people are using branches.

“The decision to close these branches ensures a more sustainable branch network for the future as we continue to invest in our digital platforms and our people.”
