Morrisons launches search for 200 suppliers

Yorkshire supermarket Morrisons is looking to source 200 suppliers from the UK as it looks to extend its range of fresh, British produce.

The retailer is looking to find new suppliers with its ‘The Nation’s Local Foodmakers’ campaign, so it can source food that is grown made or packaged within a 30-60 mile radius of each store.

It is inviting suppliers to pitch at 12 regional events, according to Retail Week, with the first being held in Keighley on March 14.

A report from the University of Leeds, commissioned by Morrisons, found that only 50% of all food eaten in the UK comes from British farms.

Mark Collings, Morrisons regional manager for Yorkshire said: “Our customers tell us they want to see even more food that is made in God’s own county and that’s why we’re asking the best suppliers to get in touch.”

With David Potts at the helm, Morrisons’ turnaround plans have gained traction. It became the fastest-growing supermarket by sales and market share earlier this month with sales up 1.9% in the 12 weeks to 7 February.

Recently it launched a tech startup initiative to support businesses which are using technology to slim down supply chains and make them more efficient.
