Cash boost supports HQ purchase for £18m turnover logistics business

Direct Express Logistics Doncaster Solutions, an £18m-turnover courier business launched in 1997 by entrepreneur Karl Brown, has expanded with the purchase of premises.

The business specialises in same day, overnight and international delivery and initially started with one van and a vision.

It now has four further sites at Cardiff, Glossop, Nottingham and Stockport serving over 2000 clients. The funding from Barclays has assisted with the purchase of their previously rented headquarters at Alpha Court, Capitol Park in Doncaster.

Brown said: “Starting my own business was a dream and it’s been rewarding to see the business grow and our customer base and our geographical reach expand with services throughout the UK and overseas.  We’re now part of the APC network which enables us to give our customers overnight delivery and we will continue with our investment plans in technology, vehicles and people to ensure the best service possible for our customers.

“It’s great that Barclays were able to help fund the new site which we will now own, securing the future of the business and taking us to the next phase of our growth plans.”

Direct Express Logistics Doncaster Solutions employs more than 200 people across the five sites and turnover for the current year is expected to exceed £18m.

Mark Flanagan of Platinum Money worked with Matthew Heaton, Barclays business development manager, Craig Moore, Barclays business manager and David Mathieson, area manager for South Yorkshire to put together the funding package for the deal.

Flanagan said: “It’s great to be able to welcome a local business that is thriving and expanding for the future to Barclays. Karl is very experienced in logistics and operates a brilliant business. The future looks bright for this ambitious company.”
