Art festival to make waves in Bridlington

Visual arts festival, ArtWaves Open Exhibition will be returning to Bridlington this year, bringing traditional, contemporary, digital and urban art to the coastal town.

Taking place from Saturday May 13 – Sunday May 14, the two-day programme will be supporting local artists, and inviting national and international talent to Bridlington Spa where the open exhibition will be hosted.

Following the theme of culture with appropriate street art, workshops, a craft fair and much more, the festival is looking to attract both the experienced artist and those simply looking to get creative.

Festival director, Lauren Frost said: “I think that the festival will bring a wide range of people to Bridlington, some that are interested in art and others not so much because of the diverse range of things we’ve got going on at the festival.”

The full programme – which will be available in March – will see high class, world renowned graffiti artists return to Bridlington Spa after the success of the street art at last year’s ArtWaves festival.

Lauren added: “There was a big graffiti world championship in the 1980s in Bridlington, and last year we brought some of those artists back and we’re doing that again this year, but in a completely different format, with something that will make a permanent installation at the Spa.”

“We’re doing some things we’ve never done before this year too, so that’s going to be quite exciting and unusual. People can come together, meet artists and likeminded people, but also be creative and have some fun.”

The festival’s craft fair will be offering the chance for artists to meet with the suppliers, see the paintbrushes and pencils before purchasing and also discover new equipment and techniques.

A range of “all-senses” immersive theatre experiences and a large installation, which is to be erected outside of Bridlington Spa, can also be seen on the weekend in May.

The festival – which is being run by East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of the ongoing investment in culture and heritage –  hopes to attract new visitors to the area whilst providing low-cost, fun activities for local residents.

Entries will be publicly displayed in the gallery at Bridlington Spa over the weekend and over the course of the fringe festival which will run from May 8 – 12.
