Yorkshire Crisps bags supermarket deal

HANDMADE crisp company Yorkshire Crisps has won a contract to supply Sainsbury’s stores across the region.

The supermarket has just placed its first order with the South Yorkshire-based company and is now stocking 50g bags of Natural Sea Salt and Henderson’s Yorkshire Sauce flavours in 17 stores.

The crisps will be delivered direct to the stores, avoiding delivery to a central distribution hub ensuring Yorkshire Crisps’ food miles are kept low.

Yorkshire Crisps’ managing director, Tony Bishop said: “We are very discerning as to which supermarkets we want to supply, and feel that Sainsbury’s meets all our criteria.

“We are impressed with their enthusiasm for supporting local suppliers. Sainsbury’s even shrunk the space reserved for a national crisp brand, to make way for Yorkshire Crisps – we hope customers are happy to see more local products on the shelves.”

Sally Davies, Sainsbury’s crisp buyer said: “We are delighted to add Yorkshire Crisps to our range. Sainsbury’s is committed to sourcing regional products and working with local suppliers.

“As Yorkshire Crisps uses local suppliers themselves, with potatoes delivered from the farm five miles away, we feel there is great commitment on both sides and a fantastic story.”

Research conducted by Yorkshire Crisps in August 2008 showed that more than 70% of Yorkshire residents surveyed preferred Yorkshire Crisps, compared to a national, well-known brand.

Results also revealed that 96% of participants would rather support local producers than large corporate businesses.

The company already supplies Yorkshire branches of The Co-operative and Morrisons and will be taking the brand to further national outlets across the country in 2009.

Henderson’s Yorkshire Sauce is the firm’s newest crisp flavour marking the first ever collaboration for Henderson’s Relish – the 100-year old Sheffield brand.
