EMPLOYEES from Barclays Corporate, Cobbetts and Baker Tilly are preparing to take part in a 45 mile sponsored walk to raise funds for St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds.
The combined group of bankers, lawyers and accountants aim to raise £7,500 for the hospice by walking along Hadrian's Wall in three days.
St Gemma's Hospice cares for more than 1,000 patients every year with terminal illnesses, predominately cancer, via an in-patient unit, day hospice and team of community nurses.
It also provide bereavement counselling for both adults and children.
The hospice hopes to raise £7.9m to fund the services, including a refurbishment of the in-patient unit. St Gemma's receive only 28% of its funding from the Government and has to raise the majority of its running costs from fundraising initiatives.
All of the money raised from the sponsored walk will go specifically to fund the refurbishment of the in-patient unit where their patients receive the most intensive of care.
Phil Dibbs, relationship director for Barclays Corporate in Yorkshire, said: "It's great to work jointly with the Leeds business community for such a worthy cause. St Gemma's provides vital support to the local community and this is a fantastic example of Barclays staff fundraising to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference."
Guy Jackson, head of office at law firm Cobbetts in Leeds, said: "We are delighted to be joining forces with both Barclays and Baker Tilly in this excellent event which will raise vital funds for the development of the charity's in-patient unit."
Richard King, Leeds office managing partner at Baker Tilly, said: "St Gemma's is a fantastic and truly deserving charity which has made a huge difference to the lives of thousands of people. We are looking forward to the walk and although we know it will be hard work, we are determined to complete it as we want to raise as much money as we can. "
Fundraising manager at St Gemma's, Elizabeth Baxter, said: "We are extremely grateful to everyone at Barclays, Cobbetts
and Baker Tilly for arranging and volunteering to take part in the Hadrian's Wall Walk. Every penny raised will support St Gemma's Hospice and specifically help us to refurbish and improve the facilities in our patients' bedrooms."
