Property forum generates debate

THE funding of future property and infrastructure developments in the Leeds City Region will come under debate at a seminar later today.

Delegates at The Property Forum 2010 – A New Beginning event will hear about new and alternative funding options from a panel made up of public and private sector representatives.

Organised by Leeds Chamber Property Forum, Financial Leeds and RICS, the event aims to address the issues surrounding the future financing of property developments during the downturn which has led to limited credit and diminished Government funding.

Among the topics under discussion will be the idea of an ‘Infrastructure Bank’ and alternative funding mechanisms, presented by Alistair Jackson of Arup.

Alan Gay, the finance director of Leeds City Council, will discuss Accelerated Development Zones (ADZs).

Naz Parker, of the West and North Yorkshire director of the Homes & Communities Agency, the government agency for housing regeneration which is in the middle of a £385m investment programme in the region, will also speak.

Mark Goldstone, of Leeds Chamber Property Forum, said: “The recession completely changed the financing framework for the property industry, and the traditional channels of the past are becoming increasingly inaccessible to developers.

“Going forward, we need to examine the possibilities of new funding mechanisms and ensure continued investment takes place in the development and regeneration of the Leeds City Region”.

The event is being held Broad Gate in Leeds from 4pm to 7pm.
