YORKSHIRE has beaten off competition from the rest of the UK to win the TravelMole award for best tourist website.
Welcome to Yorkshire's relaunched website www.yorkshire.com, which only went live at the beginning of April 2009, was highly commended for its style and depth of information.
The award, voted for by TravelMole subscribers and judged by an independent panel of travel and tourism experts, represents the first official recognition of the tourism agency's global plans to put Yorkshire on the map.
Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, speaking at the awards ceremony at Canada House in London said: "Our website is our opportunity to sell Yorkshire to the world so we are very proud to have won this award today.
"Since its relaunch www.yorkshire.com has seen traffic increase to around 50 million hits, which is encouraging when there is still so much more to come. We've got a lot of hard work ahead of us but with the support of the region's tourism businesses we can achieve our goal of making Yorkshire a top destination for national and international visitors and the website will play a big part in helping us do that."
In total, the awards received over 300 nominations and more than 15,000 votes were cast.
The judging panel consisted of Peter Healey, founder and chief executive of The Vertical Group, and former Teletext managing director Matt Cheevers, now managing director of consultancy business Smooth Direction.
