YourNews: Business and Academia Unite to Support Leeds Beckett Student Innovation

The UK’s leading decorative print finishers, based in Leeds was delighted to have been involved in supporting creative student talent at an event held by The Retail Institute last week.  Sitting on the judging panel alongside Nestle, BASF, RPC, AMCOR, Celloglas fed back industry insight to Leeds Beckett Packaging Design students taking part in ‘Designing Packaging for Consumers’ and were proud to present runner up Samantha Ogden with a 3D mini iPad.

Samantha designed a re-usable shampoo bottle, The Phin, in response to the brief to create a FMCG Pack that incorporates sensory & sustainability elements. Richard Pinkney, Director at Celloglas said: “Samantha’s design was very clever as she’d taken sustainability to mean re-usability and had created a multi-purpose package that appealed to the senses of young children, encouraging the parents to buy the shampoo that doubled up as a bath toy. We liked her thinking and the concept was very well presented, showing strong business acumen”.

As Celloglas continue to support some of the best of British retailers with their latest launch of their innovative e-commerce packaging, the Mirri Wow Pack,  they have become a member of the Retail Institute to work collaboratively for the sector.

Pinkney, said: “We are keen to provide insight to the retail sector on the psychological and emotional triggers attached to print and packaging and we’re committed to investing in product development, fuelled by academic insights. We saw the Retail Institute as a great fit. We are also really keen to encourage and support local graduates in the creative industries and being involved in this event really opened our eyes to the talent coming out of Leeds Beckett”.

Sukky Jassi, Head of the Retail Institute said: “Celloglas is an established yet innovative business. With print finishes such as fragrance, holographic, thermochromic, glow in the dark and environmentally friendly laminate they are working with retailers to take print to the next level. This is great for our students to learn from and we’re delighted that Celloglas are also interested in fuelling further product development with our research, as that’s what we’re here for – to use academia to support business development in the retail sector”.

Celloglas is based in Hunslet, Leeds, also with sites in Leicester and Reading and provides print finishing for POS and packaging in the retail sector, as well as working closely with publishers on creative magazine covers.
