Developing for the Future in Northallerton

North Yorkshire housebuilder Berkeley DeVeer has welcomed the builders of the future to its Mulberry Vale development in Northallerton, with Year 1 pupils from Applegarth Primary School enjoying a site open day.

The 32 five and six year-olds were given a guided tour of the development by site manager, Garry Wake, contracts manager, Jason Albrecht and safety co-ordinator, Lewis Senior. The children enjoyed seeing what tools and equipments were involved in the building of a property and were given a demonstration by the site team.

Next, the youngsters were taken into a half-complete shell property to show them an unfinished home, midway through the build process. Following that, the children were allowed to explore the completed show home, allowing them to see the methods and materials they had learned about put into practice, whilst learning about interior design and the affect it has on a property.

Speaking of the visit Tony Whiteley, teacher at Applegarth Primary, said: “The children have been focusing on a unit of enquiry called ‘Street Detectives’. It involves learning about the buildings around us and studying maps. The visit to the building site gave the children first hand experience of what materials are involved in the house building process and built on the learning they had been doing in Science lessons.

“It also inspired the children to write about their visit and have a go at drawing plans to build their own house. Watching all the machinery and workers on site has given the children a long lasting memory. Thank you to everyone at Berkeley Deveer!”

This was echoed by Daniel Newett, managing director at Berkeley DeVeer, who added: “Working closely with the communities in which we build is of paramount importance to us and welcoming a local school is a great way of helping find the builders of tomorrow.

“As there is currently a construction skill shortage, it is a great way of showing youngsters that a career in building can be fun and rewarding. It is also a brilliant opportunity to show them all the additional roles that may not spring to mind when thinking of the building trade, such as sales, surveying and interior design.”

Mulberry Vale, located on Romanby Road, Northallerton, is a mix of 25 three and four-bedroom properties with prices starting from £199,950. The show home is open Tuesday afternoons and Saturday from 11am-4pm – then by appointment outside of those times.

Berkeley DeVeer has more than 25 years’ experience of developing properties all across Yorkshire and currently has eight live developments around the region.
