Commuters suffered road and rail pains yesterday (18 July) afternoon after a fire on a Cross Country train broke out just outside Derby, leaving roads closed and the rail timetable with severe delays.

Some 175 people were evacuated from a train traveling from Penzance to Glasgow at around 1pm.

A statement from British Transport Police said: “The fire happened under the main carriage on a Cross Country Trains service.

“Enquiries are being made to establish the cause of the fire, but at this time we do not believe this to be suspicious.”
