Toyota to pause Burnaston production on day after Brexit

Toyota has said it will stop production at its Burnaston plant on 1 November over fears that a no-deal Brexit will disrupt the delivery of parts.

Workers have asked not to come in for their shifts on Friday 1 November and to return to work the following Monday. The carmaker said it won’t reduce the volume of its output and that staff will have to make up the hours lost at a later date.

Toyota has been stockpiling parts in preparation for Brexit and says its has supplies to last it two days in the case of disruption, rather than the usual four hours.

The move comes the day after a union delegation led by Jack Dromey MP, Steve Turner, Unite assistant general secretary for manufacturing and Jude Brimble, GMB national secretary for manufacturingmet Michael Gove to warn him that a no deal Brexit will be a “catastrophic disaster”, that will “destroy skilled manufacturing jobs and communities across the UK”.
