M1 closure in Leicestershire causes rush hour chaos

The M1 in Leicestershire is currently closed southbound between J20 (A4303, Lutterworth) and J19 (M6, Catthorpe) due to a serious traffic collision.

Leicestershire Police are in attendance, along with other emergency services, and Traffic Officers have established road closures.

Highways England has issued the following advice:

For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.

If travelling towards this area from much further afield, you may wish to change your strategic route, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road Variable Message Signs and media.

Traffic on approach is being diverted via the Solid (Black) Square symbol:-

– At M1 J20, take the 3rd exit onto the A4303 westbound

– Continue for approx. 2.5 miles, to the junction with the A5 (Cross In Hand roundabout)

– Take the 1st exit onto the A5 southbound

– Continue for approx. 8 miles, to the junction with the A428

– Follow the A428 to the junction with the M1 J18.

– Take the 3rd exit and rejoin the M1 southbound

Traffic may also wish to use the A42 and M42 (from J23A), or the M69 (from J21), and then the M6 southbound to rejoin the M1 at J19.
