Barcelona star held talks to buy Notts County, say reports

Gerard Piqué

Barcelona superstar Gerard Piqué almost bought Notts County in the summer, according to reports.

In a move that would have stunned English football, The Athletic reports that talks in London between then Magpies owner Alan Hardy and Piqué’s Kosmos Global Holding company took place over the summer.

The Athletic says that Piqué was attracted to the Meadow Lane Club’s rich history, but the court case over an upaid tax bill meant that Hardy was forced to sell to a Danish consortium headed up by Alexander and Christoffer Reedtz in late July.

Piqué reportedly wanted to turn Notts County into a “finishing school” for homegrown talent.

Piqué spent four years with Manchester United before joining Barcelona in 2008. He won the World Cup with Spain in South Africa in 2010.

Notts County were relegated from the Football League last season, but have recently enjoyed an upturn in fortunes. A 2-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge on Tuesday night leaves them seventh in the National League and in the race for promotion back to the Football League at the first attempt.
