A proposed £22 million leisure centre in Coalville has been granted planning permission by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

In partnership with NWLDC, leisure operator Everyone Active will build and run the new centre off Stephenson Way.

It will replace Hermitage Leisure Centre, which will stay open until the new development is ready.

Work on the scheme is set to begin in January 2020 and is expected to take around 18 months to complete.

The leisure centre will include a gym, swimming pool, squash courts and an eight court sports hall. A café will also be built on site and a cycle track will feature in the grounds.

Chairman of NWLDC’s planning committee, Councillor Nigel Smith, said: “This was a highly anticipated and complex application which the committee very carefully considered before coming to the decision to approve.

“There are lots of important considerations with this application, including access, the development within the area of separation between Coalville and Whitwick and the environmental credentials of the building.

“The committee agreed that the overarching positive contribution that this new leisure centre will make to health and wellbeing in the district, the exceptional high quality of design and the detailed mitigation for its impact on its surroundings were the main reasons behind the decision to grant planning permission.”

Dan Hicks, area contract manager at Everyone Active, added: “It’s brilliant news that plans for the new state-of-the-art Coalville Leisure Centre have been granted and we can start work to bring this fantastic facility to life. It’s been an exciting few months, with the completion of the first phase of renovations at Hood Park in September, and now we have this great development on the plans for Coalville.”
