Car retailer reveals plans for ‘iconic’ Nottingham showroom

How the scheme could look

Around 55 jobs could be created on the outskirts of Nottingham after car retail giant Pendragon revealed plans to build a new Porsche dealership on vacant land near the Wheatcroft Island in Edwalton.

Pendragon says it wants to build the new high-end dealership along with a pub and senior living accommodation scheme.

The car giant says the development will feature an “iconic showroom” “landmark feature” at the gateway location to Nottingham.

The company added that the new Porsche corporate identity would be known as “Destination Porsche”. The original prototype retail concept was revealed in early 2019 in Palm Springs, USA. The first European facility to follow this design is under construction in Dortmund, Germany. The proposed design for the new facility in Nottingham is part of the global roll out of the new Porsche concept.

A statement on behalf of Pendragon by the Unwin Jones Partnership and Planning and Design Group said: “The development will be an efficient use of brownfield land and will also assist in supporting and delivering the community hub necessary to make this fast-growing location a fully sustainable development.

“The proposed senior living accommodation will offer a high quality residential development aimed specifically at older people.

“The public house will accommodate a restaurant and function areas, and will provide a communal facility for local residents to utilise.”

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, Pendragon said its performance had improved “significantly” during the second half of the financial year despite challenging market conditions and weakened consumer demand.

It said its store closure programme, which saw 22 outlets close last year, and a clearer focus on operational cost management have both contributed to an upturn in its fortunes. While Pendragon’s pre-tax profits are expected to be around the bottom end of current expectations, the company insists it is on a “much stronger footing” going into 2020.
