High-end hotel group hires industry big-hitter

A BGF-backed, Lincolnshire-based hotel group has appointed a prominent member of the Visit England advisory board as its new non-executive chair.

The Coaching Inn Group has hired Denis Wormwell, who also acts as chair for travel and accommodation solutions provider CMAC Group, to replace outgoing chair Andrew Guy, who has decided to leave the company after five years’ service on the board.

Wormwell was previously CEO of private equity-backed tour operator and hotel business Shearing’s Group, and has held various leadership and director roles at National Express Group, Thomas Cook and Flying Colours Leisure Group.

The Coaching Inn Group, which has its headquarters in Boston, operates 17 hotels in traditional market towns across the UK. The introduction of its premium casual dining brand the Eatery & Coffee House has been a big factor in its recent success.

Since March 2015, BGF has invested £15 million to support the group’s expansion.

Wormwell said: “The Coaching Inn Group has carved a fantastic reputation in the market over the last few years, achieving impressive scale through a carefully selected portfolio of venues and a growing customer base. I’m delighted to be joining the business as chair at such an exciting time, as it looks to drive scale even further as part of its £50 million expansion plan.”

Coaching Inn Group CEO Kevin Charity added: “We’re really pleased that Denis has joined the Coaching Inn Group to support our exciting forward strategy. His understanding of the accommodation sector brings a new dynamic to our business, and his marketing skills to maximise on this are greatly welcomed. We look forward to working with him over the coming months during our next phase of expansion.

“I would like to thank Andrew for all the service, advice and guidance he has given us over the last five years. His insight into improving our operations, especially regarding food and beverage, has been invaluable and we wish him all the best for the future.”
