Clifton Bridge lane closed again for ‘further in-depth inspections’

The saga over the closure of one of Nottingham’s main arterial routes in and out of the city may not be over this morning (Sunday 15 March) after Highways England announced that one lane of the A52 Clifton Bridge has been closed eastbound within the A453 junctions to allow “further in-depth bridge inspections”.

A statement from Highways England said: “Following further investigations this morning structural engineers took the precautionary decision to close the eastbound carriageway of the A52 Clifton Bridge to manage the type and weight of vehicles in the second lane.

“Safety is our number one priority. We will not compromise the safety of road users or our workers. This bridge is critical to Nottingham, as it carries 60,000 vehicles a day. We will reopen another lane as soon as it safe to do so.”

The news comes days after the bridge was reopened after weeks of closures brought about by corroded steel cables.
