£25m town regeneration bid submitted

Stapleford’s bid to boost its town centre has gone into government today (January 29) with Broxtowe MP Darren Henry pledging to make the case to ministers.

A months’-long consultation programme saw Stapleford residents play a key role in shaping plans to secure a £25m investment under the Government’s Town Fund.

Now, a detailed final bid has been submitted to the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government by a Towns Board which brought together local businesses, local people, MP Darren Henry and Broxtowe Borough Council.

Ministers are being asked by the town to invest in a community leisure hub,  cycle ‘super highway’, safer roads,  and an Enterprise Hub  – as well as a  COVID-19 Town Centre Recovery Grant Scheme and adult learning and skills centre.

Milan Radulovic MBE, Broxtowe Borough Council leader, said:  “This major £25m Towns Deal investment would make a huge impact, breathing new life and opportunity into this much deserving community. Not only would it be an investment in Stapleford, but also an investment in the whole of the Borough, which will put us in a fantastic position for regeneration of the wider Broxtowe area. What a great way to kick off 2021.”

Broxtowe MP, Darren Henry, said:  “Investing in towns is a key part of the Government’s levelling-up agenda and I have been working with local residents and colleagues in Government to ensure our bid is as strong as possible. The response from our community has been exceptional – I could not be more proud.

“Securing this Towns Deal will help to revitalise Stapleford, making a real difference to jobs and opportunities for local people. After all, Stapleford is a town with a great community and this is why I wanted my base to be there. I want to see investment which is going to make people feel proud, attract business and provide better facilities for families now and into the future.”

Stapleford businessman Ian Jowett, chair of Broxtowe’s Towns Deal board, said:  “Today marks an important milestone in this significant Town Deal Fund project – the biggest investment the town will have seen for a long time.

“I’m really proud of how our residents, community group and businesses have come together to develop this plan, which I know will have a huge impact now, and kickstart further investment and regeneration of the town in the future. Alongside the new housing developments in the town, the innovation campus and HS2, the future definitely looks bright for Stapleford.”

Stapleford’s proposal will now be reviewed by the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government with approval expected by May 2021.
