People: Sorted Communications; Acres Architects

Laura Roberts

A four-week work experience placement has turned into a new hire for a Nottingham communications agency.

Laura Roberts is Sorted Communications’ new marketing and communications assistant. She joined the company in February on a four-week work experience placement – and impressed the team so much that she was offered a permanent contract before her placement ended.

“I applied to work for Sorted as a freelance proofreader, having done bits of proofreading for a year or so,” said Roberts. “I have a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and have struggled to find work in that field. It’s a competitive industry, and I kept finding myself in the old catch-22 where I needed experience to get a job and needed a job to get experience.

“When I applied for the position at Sorted, I also sent in some writing work I’d done, on a whim.”

While Roberts lacked the relevant experience to be taken on as a proofreader, CEO Ali Marsland saw her potential, and offered her work experience.

“We’re really pleased to have Laura on board as a permanent member of the team,” said Marsland. “She’s a great writer and picks things up very quickly. I’m looking forward to working with her more and continuing to support her professional development.”

Nottingham-based Acres Architects has taken on two more staff.

Craig Swain joins the Acres team in a newly-created contract liaison manager role, while Tom Davidson joins in the role of property maintenance manager.

Edward Acres, RIBA, commented “We’re very excited to announce that two more team members coming on board to help us continue to improve the service we can offer our existing and new clients. I’m sure that Craig and Tom will add a great deal of value and help us achieve this goal from day one.”
