Clipsham stone scoops two prestigious national awards

Clipsham stone has become the go-to stone for restoration projects in Oxford

Stamford Stone’s world-renowned Clipsham limestone has made the cut and won two top accolades in the Stone Federation Great Britain National Stone Awards 2020 which have just been announced.

A high profile redevelopment project within the heart of the historic St John’s College in Oxford has claimed the winning title for New Build Modern Category, with Stamford Stone listed as the official stone supplier.

In addition, a private build project to create a seven-bed country house in Sutton, Cambridgeshire, again using Stamford Stone’s finest Clipsham stone, has been judged as Highly Commended in the Traditional Style Stonemasonry Category.

Both winning projects incorporate Clipsham limestone as the specified stone. Its popularity is derived from its durability and its rich creamy hues which match surrounding historic stonework.

The winning project for the New Build Modern Category is the redevelopment of the Library & Study Centre at St John’s College. This project involved the commission of an impressive large scale feature stone wall and the development of a sympathetic new build adjoining existing historic masonry.

Sutton Lodge, a privately developed Georgian-fronted home, picked up its Highly Commended title as an impressive three-storey new build, complete with triple garage, orangery and grand stone pillared entrance. This project showcases the finest of Clipsham Ashlar stone.

Dan Wilson, Director of Stamford Stone: “We are absolutely delighted to have our superb stone recognised in these national awards. We have worked hard to promote our Clipsham limestone to be the go-to stone for both development and restoration projects throughout the UK over the years and this work is beginning to pay dividends. The limestone we excavate from our quarries is the most recognised stone in the area for large-scale commercial projects.”

“Stamford Stone is the exclusive global supplier of Clipsham limestone. As owners and managers of the quarry sites, we know the provenance of our stone and we can guarantee reserves for the next 900 years,” adds Dan.
