Some 13 companies from across the East Midlands have received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

Now in their 55th year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the country which recognise outstanding achievements by UK businesses in four categories: innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity through social mobility.

The awards last for five years and are judged by independent panels based on recommendations. They are then passed to the Prime Minister’s advisory committee, who make the final recommendation to Her Majesty the Queen.

Making this year’s list are:

In the International Trade category: Woolroom, the Oakham-based mattresses and bedding manufacturer and retailer; Ashbourne-based Mastermover, the materials handling firm; Nottingham-based software firm Onyx Insight; Brunel Healthcare Manufacturing, the Swadlincote manufacturer of vitamins; Cofresh Snack Foods, based in Leicester; Novametrics, a data analysis and knowledge management consultancy based in Derby; Nottingham clothing manufacturer GH Hurt & Son; and Leicester tech firm Apption Labs

In the Innovation category: Worksop-based tack manufacturer Total Saddle Solutions; Derby-based performance sportswear manufacturer HUUB; Lincoln-based Inzpire, a supplier of defence managed services and mission systems; Leicester-based EarthSense Systems, which provides an innovative air quality service that combines hardware and software; Nottingham-based software firm to the renewables sector Onyx Insight; and Leicester-based Apption Labs.

Apption Labs CEO, Joseph Cruz, said: “It’s humbling to receive not just one but two of the UK’s highest business accolades as they validate the hard work and passion we have put into our product. This recognition further fuels our ambition to become a household name and to be the most desirable IoT tool for home and professional kitchens around the globe. Both awards confirm that we are staying true to our ethos of continual innovation and improvement.”

MasterMover’s Andy Owen said: “Receiving the Queen’s Award is a recognition of the hard work and dedication of everybody in the company and the journey so far that we’ve been on together. This is a wonderful accolade we can all be proud of as we look forward to an exciting future.”

HUUB founder Dean Jackson said: “To be recognised in the Queen’s Awards really is amazing.

“I would never have dreamed when starting this business on my kitchen table nine years ago that we would be recognised for what really makes HUUB special: our innovation.

“We constantly strive to make athletes better and faster and our sport more fulfilling. We are relentless in the pursuit of performance and innovation sits at the heart of everything we do.

“I’d like to thank the team for driving our ambition and aspirations to be the very best in our field and for believing in the crazy ideas that drive innovation and experimentation.”
